Belle Inspired Dress

Ever since they announced the new Beauty and the Beast movie, I was excited to go see it since this is a classic Disney movie that I grew up watching. I really wanted to take my daughter and share a little piece of my childhood.

She had already seen the cartoon version, so she was very familiar with Belle. She is a huge fan of the Disney princess, she can literally name them all. I thought it be cute if she wore an inspired Belle dress to go see the movie. I thought long and hard how I wanted to design the dress, because I didn't want it to be too overly done. My initial thought was lace but I really wanted her to be comfy while watching the movie. That week was pretty hectic to go fabric shopping, luckily I remembered I had a soft knit fabric in my stash!!

I wanted a modern take on the Belles dress, still keeping the classic yellow, and off the shoulders look. I quickly drafted the pattern pieces, which included an off the shoulder front and back. Before cutting the off the shoulder rectangle I had to measure her from shoulder to shoulder. For the skirt I made another rectangle twice the measurement of the bodice front and back to get neat gathers plus the desired length. In total of four pieces.

After cutting all the pieces I was relief that I had enough fabric for this dress, considering I only had half a yard! This was a quick sew since it was a knit I used my handy dandy serger so it was a win win for me. Once I completed the dress I had my daughter try it on and I had to add some straps to keep the dress from slipping. She absolutely loved it and keep telling me her name was Belle, too cute.

My little darling was excited to take pictures with the dress, I even tried to do her hair like Belle. She also requested yellow nail polish to match her dress. Now a days she makes executive decisions on her complete look, feels like she is a lil lady lol. She wore the dress all day and even wanted to wear it as a pj, but I told her we had to wash it. I can already tell this is her favorite mommy made dress of all time.

I wouldn't be surprise if I start making more Disney inspired dresses or outfits considering she really loved this one. At least when she plays "dress up" and I can't get her to get out of the outfit while running errands she will still look like she's wearing semi regular clothes lol.

As a mommy of two, I stop and stare at my two beautiful daughters I began to reminisce on the day they were both born.
